Video, wow, what a production….

Camera in hand; Nikon D7000, ready to shoot some video. So where to start first? How about putting it on a tripod. Well the ball head currently in use will hold it in place but not ideal. Looks like a fluid head will be needed for clean movement and versatility. Next thing to think about is audio. What a whole new dynamic feature we have never dealt with. Probably going to need a mic as well. So far the tools for this new form of capture are adding up and the game has just started. No wonder movies cost millions right? Think of their gear list while having to deal with talent and a large production. Back to our little production.

So the sun is finally coming out up here in Southern Alaska. That is good and bad for us. Good that we want to get outside and get some clips with that nice sunshine, bad because looking at this two inch monitor on the back of the camera while recording is a true challenge. Is my lens focused properly? How is my framing of the subject? Is my exposure correct? An external monitor would make knowing this information much easier. And here we go on more money needed to properly get this program going. A quick peek at some lighting as well and after many gasps I feel like a lot of this will be a later production asset. Better just learn what we have at this point and get some practice work under way.

After a few variations of panning and a decent interview set up with the new mic it seems as things are perking up in our new video dept. So with these couple clips we start talking software. Oh Lord. More learning time and dough when we have a few loaves in the oven already. Hoping to pick up the new Final Cut X and get that working as soon as it is released. Good price and we hope it has most functions needed to get us going. Tough to justify the full version at this point. We all know the importance of good software.

As we learn we will share our experience and hopefully some engaging videos. Old still photo habits will be tough to kick but with some time behind the lens capturing video we will have a whole new product to offer. Some capital, practice, and editing skills will be necessary to put this package together. We need to use this great opportunity that we have under the blanket of our professional photo studio. You must be able to adapt in this crazy era of great technology. Besides, learning a new craft is always challenging and fun anyway. Action!!

Quicksilver Commercial has updated their website with new photos

After a tough back and forth battle on which photos to use in updating our commercial website, we have finally knocked out the final selects. Quicksilver will celebrate 25 Years of photography this summer which has produced a mind numbing amount of photos, all of which are in large file cabinets or on one of many large hard drives. The digital age has brought many exciting techniques to create amazing photos but when you look back it has taken a lot of film and polaroids to achieve this level of photography. Technology will always be changing and we will always be evolving as photographers. New techniques combined with old, new concepts rooted from old and new life shed on old photos are always motivation to keep shooting. Imagine what another 25 years will bring to our amazing world of photography. I’m Joel and as many of you know I have been taking photographs for about 25 years now. Over that time span I have accumulated a large quantity of what I hope you think are high quality and visually appealing imagery. My subject matter over the years has varied greatly. I have tried to not limit myself as to what I take pictures of. As I introduce new images into this limited edition series you will notice some consistencies and hopefully some surprises. I will most likely be selecting images for this series somewhat randomly, depending on what photo I am liking that particular day. Obviously some of these you may like and others… not so much. Quicksilver Commercial Photography Has A New Blog!!

Here we go-ready to get blogging! It is very exciting to see what direction this goes and how many eyes it will entertain. We will be posting new thoughts and photos from our commercial and personal work throughout the year. Questions or comments are appreciated and I hope to see you checking in regularly.

“Elements of Pyramid Lake”

The image above is one of my favorite images that I created for Quicksilver’s Art Walk 2010 show. “Elements of Pyramid Lake” was captured last year on a great outing with the Camera Corral gang. Peering into the water I was able to capture a wide angle view of a weathered log and reeds mixed with gorgeous mountain reflections. Endless photo opportunities were abundant at this Northern Idaho gem.

I am going to start the first few entries revealing art that Joel and I have produced for the recent showings at Starbucks on NW Boulevard and also Java starting March 5th. Our studio will also be an open gallery during this years 2nd Friday Art Walk taking place in downtown CDA starting April 8th. Be sure to come down to see our latest work and talk with the artists.
